    International Day for Biodiversity Celebrated at Government Model Degree College Zanskar.
    Zanskar, May 22, 2026: The International Day for Biodiversity was celebrated at Government Model Degree College Zanskar with great enthusiasm and active participation from faculty members and students. The programme was organized to highlight the importance of biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of natural resources.
    The programme began with an introductory speech by Dr. Mohd Hussain, Assistant professor Zoology, who spoke about the importance of conserving biodiversity and emphasized on the theme of this year, “Acting locally for global impact.” He explained how small local actions can bring meaningful positive change at the global level and highlighted the role of individuals and communities in biodiversity conservation.
    This was followed by a presentation on the mammalian diversity of Ladakh by Dr. Jigmet Zazay, Assistant professor Zoology, She provided a detailed overview of important mammalian species found in Ladakh and discussed their ecological significance in maintaining a stable ecosystem. She also emphasized the importance of conserving these species as part of the natural heritage of the region.
    The Principal of the college, Dr. Amjad Ali Abbasi, delivered an insightful talk on the sustainable use of local resources. He particularly highlighted seabuckthorn, for which Zanskar is well known, and discussed its scope for sustainable utilization and value addition. He encouraged students to work hard with dedication and innovative ideas so that they can become financially independent and self-employed through the proper use and promotion of local resources such as sea buckthorn.
    The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Mohd Hussain, who thanked all participants, faculty members, and students for making the event a successful.
