Invasive Buff-Tip Moth Threatens Ladakh’s Fragile Ecosystem, Study Warns.
Kargil, May 12, 2026: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Kargil headed by Dr Mohd Hussain Assistant Professor, GDC Zanskar, has reported the occurrence of an invasive Buff-tip moth in the Himalayan region of Ladakh. The study, conducted from June 2021 to August 2023, documented the alarming spread and impact of the moth on local vegetation.
The findings revealed that the invasive species causes complete defoliation of its host plant within thirty days, underscoring the serious ecological threat posed to the fragile ecosystem of the region. The researchers observed that the moth has established a strong foothold in the Suru Valley, particularly on Salix alba (white willow), a tree species of immense ecological and environmental importance in the cold arid region of Ladakh.
Scientists expressed concern that the unchecked spread of the pest could adversely affect biodiversity and the sustainability of local vegetation. The study emphasized the urgent need for regular monitoring, ecological assessment and development of effective management strategies to contain the invasive pest and safeguard the region’s plant resources.
The findings were featured in the Science column of The Hindu dated May 09, 2026, drawing national attention to the emerging ecological challenge in Ladakh. Following directions from the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, a team of scientists visited the region to verify the occurrence and assess the extent of the infestation.
The team consisted of Dr. Mithilesh Kumar Arya, Deputy Director (PP) from CIPMC Jammu, Dr. Haroon Rashid Hakla, APPO(PP) from CIPMC Srinagar, Dr. Nasreen F. Kacho, Senior Scientist & Head KVK Kargil and Dr. Nazeer Hussain, Agronomist, KVK Kargil. Under the supervision of prime author Dr Mohd Hussain, AP, Zoology GDC Zansker.
A field survey for Buff Tip Moth in Salix Sp. has been carried out in the Villages Minjee, Khumbathang, Faroona, Khachan, Lankarchey, Thiuna, Thasgum, Sankoo of Suru Valley. This survey has been carried out, as instructed by Plant Protection Adviser, Govt. of India as this invasive pest has been introduced in Suru Valley and damages the leafs of Salix sp. as the Phalera sp. is voracious, polyphagous and can make the whole tree defoliated within a week.
It is a matter of concern to control this invasive pest and confine itself to this particular area. In a survey, it has been observed that right now pest is in pupation stage, found the pupa in soil debris around Salix tree from Khachan and Faroona Villages.
