Leh Remembers Kargil War Heroes on 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas
Leh, July 26, 2026: The 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas was observed with patriotic fervour at the War Memorial, Singhay Namgyal Chowk, Leh, to honour the brave soldiers who laid down their lives during the 1999 Kargil War. The occasion brought together Veer Naris, war veterans, ex-servicemen, serving personnel, civil officers, and members of the public in a collective tribute to the nation’s heroes.
Divisional Commissioner, Ladakh, Shri Shurbir Singh, IAS, attended the programme as the Chief Guest. The ceremony commenced with the National Song and the National Anthem.
In his address, Shri Shurbir Singh recalled the courage and sacrifice of the soldiers who fought in the Kargil War to safeguard the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He said that thousands of brave soldiers displayed exceptional valour during the conflict, while 32 brave sons of Ladakh laid down their lives in the line of duty. Their sacrifice, he said, remains a lasting inspiration and a proud chapter in the history of the nation.
The President of the Ex-Servicemen Association, Leh, delivered the vote of thanks and expressed appreciation to the Chief Guest, invited dignitaries, Veer Naris, war veterans, ex-servicemen, serving personnel, and everyone who participated in the programme for paying tribute to the martyrs and making the event a meaningful commemoration.
The programme concluded with a felicitation ceremony, during which Veer Naris, war veterans, and ex-servicemen were honoured in recognition of their invaluable service and sacrifices for the nation, particularly their significant contributions during the Kargil War.
A one-minute silence was observed in memory of Late Colonel Sonam Wangchuk (Retd.), MVC, the Lion of Ladakh and a decorated Kargil War hero, as a mark of respect for his exemplary service and sacrifice for the nation.
Among those present were Administrative Secretary, Tourism Department, Shri Sanjit Rodrigues, IAS; Deputy Inspector General, Ladakh Range, Dr. Koushal Kumar Sharma, IPS; Deputy Commissioner, Leh, Shri Romil Singh Donk, IAS; former Member of Parliament Shri Thupstan Tsewang; Venerable Bhikkhu Sanghasena; Additional Superintendent of Police, Leh; Director, Rajya Sainik Board, Ladakh; representatives of various religious organisations; political leaders; officers of the Civil Administration, Ladakh Police; ex-servicemen; and members of the public.
