MP Ladakh Visits Cloudburst-Affected Karkit Badgam, Karkitchoo and Hardass, Assures Relief and Permanent Solutions.
Kargil, August 9, 2026: Member of Parliament, Ladakh, Mohmad Haneefa Jan visited the recent cloudburst-affected areas of Karkit Badgam, Karkitchoo and Hardass in Kargil district and interacted with affected families and villagers to assess the damage and review relief and restoration requirements.
The MP was accompanied by Executive Councillor Altaf Hussain, Chief Horticulture Officer, BDO Kargil, Naib Tehsildar and officers and officials of various departments.
At Badgam, villagers apprised the MP of extensive damage to agricultural land caused by the cloudburst and sought immediate restoration of the affected land. They also urged for a permanent protective solution for the flood-prone area and requested rehabilitation of the mine-prone area at the earliest.
The villagers further requested construction of protective bunds using stone from Patthar towards Budgam village to divert floodwater and prevent it from entering the habitation. The MP assured the villagers that the proposal for the bund would be taken up with the concerned authorities at the Centre.
The villagers also raised the issue of clearing landmines near the Latoo area and sought rehabilitation of the affected families in the area.
Executive Councillor Altaf Hussain urged the PHE Department to restore the JMM pipeline at the earliest to ensure water supply to the affected areas. He also assured that ₹20 lakh from his CCDF budget would be provided for necessary works.
The MP assured the affected families that relief would be provided on a priority basis to households whose properties have been damaged, as per the applicable provisions. He also stressed the need for permanent measures to protect vulnerable areas from recurring cloudburst and flash-flood incidents.
At Karkitchoo, villagers apprised the MP of damages to apricot orchards and sought compensation for damaged fruit-bearing trees. They also requested a submersible pump for agricultural purposes and urged for a permanent solution for the flood-prone areas.
At Hardass, the MP assessed the damage caused to residential structures, with villagers informing him that two houses had been damaged. They sought assistance for rehabilitation and requested funding support for the damaged mosque.
Residents of Thangbuthang village in Hardass also raised the issue of permission for construction of houses. The PHE Department was requested to provide pipes for restoration of damaged water supply pipelines, while the Mechanical Department was requested to provide a dumper for clearing debris from the affected areas.
The MP directed the concerned departments to expedite restoration and relief measures and assured the people that issues requiring major interventions and permanent solutions would be taken up with the concerned authorities.
The MP had also planned to visit Chiktan to assess the situation there; however, due to an urgent session in Delhi, the visit has been deferred. He assured that he would visit Chiktan after attending the Delhi session.
