As a part of the Nationwide Initiative to Strengthen Newborn Survival by NNF ,NRP Day was also Celebrated at SNM Hospital Leh Ladakh on 10TH May 2026
The National Neonatology Forum (NNF) India is celebrating NRP Day on May 10th with large-scale, hands-on skill training programs being conducted across India. This initiative represents one of the largest synchronized healthcare training efforts in the country.
The event was conducted with the vision of ensuring that every newborn receives timely and effective resuscitation support at birth.
Newborn mortality remains a major public health challenge in India. A significant proportion of neonatal deaths occur due to inability of the baby to establish breathing at birth. The first few minutes after birth are critical, and timely intervention by trained healthcare providers can prevent these avoidable deaths. Simple, evidence-based skills to help babies breathe at birth can make the difference between life and death.
Recognizing this urgent need, NNF India has conceptualized and executed this massive capacity-building initiative. Across the country, 1100 training courses are being conducted, with nearly 23,000 healthcare providers participating.
The event at SNM Hospital Leh was inaugurated by Medical Superintendent Dr Yangchen Dolma. The lead instructor for the training was Dr Sunil Isher Neonatologist who was assigned by NNF India. Dr Tsering Norphel was the instructor for the course. Dr Spalchen Gonbo was the course coordinator . 22 participants which included Gynaecologists, Pediatricians, Anesthetists , DNB students, staff nurses and ANM working at Newborn stabilization unit of SDH Nubra and CHC Khaltsi and Special care newborn unit of SNM Hospital were trained during the 4 hour long training.
These hands-on trainings are being conducted completely free of cost and include healthcare workers from both government and private sectors. This inclusive approach ensures wider reach and uniform strengthening of newborn care practices.
This synchronized nationwide effort is expected to set a record for conducting the highest number of neonatal resuscitation skill trainings in a single day, marking a historic milestone in India’s journey toward improving newborn survival.
