Leh, June 3, 2025: Professor Sachin Gunthe from IIT Madras called on the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Brigadier (Dr) BD Mishra (Retd) at Raj Niwas to apprise him of the progress and ongoing works at the Sindhu Central University campus at Khaltse in Leh. Principal Secretary, Sanjeev Khirwar, IAS and Secretary, Higher Education, Bhanu Prabha, IAS, were present in the meeting.
Prof Sachin informed the HLG about the decision taken to give preference to local students, as suggested by the HLG in the previous meeting, by providing five grace marks to students from Ladakh for their enrollment in courses at Sindhu Central University. He also informed about the post-graduate programmes being offered at the University: Master of technology-Atmospheric & Climate Science, Master of Technology- Energy Technology & Policy and Master of Arts (MA)- Public Policy and the introduction of Master of Arts (MA)-Buddhist Studies for the academic session 2025-26 for the first time.
Prof Sachin informed the HLG that there was proper deliberation to offer an MA course in Buddhist Studies, which is unique from other Buddhist Studies courses offered by other universities. He also informed that the University will partner with local monasteries to provide internships to monks and stated that they have already met with officials at Thiksey Monastery regarding this initiative. He also informed the HLG that the first convocation ceremony of the University would be held in the second half of July 2025.
The HLG commended Prof. Sachin and other faculty members, along with the Higher Education Department, UT Ladakh, for introducing relevant programmes at Sindhu Central University and assured them of all possible assistance in successfully operating the institute.
