Road Safety Awareness Drive Launched in Leh under National Road Safety Month 2026.
Leh, 01 January 2026: As part of National Road Safety Month 2026, a Sadak Suraksha Abhiyan focusing on the implementation of the Zero Fatality Solution was launched today at Singey Namgyal Chowk, Leh, under the theme “Sadak Suraksha, Jeevan Raksha.” The month-long road safety campaign will be carried out across the district through awareness programmes, enforcement drives and media outreach activities, and will conclude on 31 January 2026.
The initiative is being organised by the Motor Vehicles Department, UT Ladakh, in collaboration with the District Administration Leh, with the aim of promoting road safety awareness and encouraging responsible driving behaviour among road users.
The launch of the campaign was marked in the presence of Deputy Commissioner Leh Romil Singh Donk, Regional Transport Officer Ladakh Dr. Zahida Bano, Additional Deputy Commissioner Leh Ghulam Mohd and Additional Superintendent of Police Leh Rigzen Sangdup, along with officers from Traffic Police, NCC, DSP Traffic and officials from various line departments.
The Deputy Commissioner emphasised the importance of following traffic rules, using safety gear such as helmets and seat belts, and sharing responsibility to reduce road accidents and fatalities. He stated that awareness, proper enforcement and regular communication through media are essential to achieve the goal of zero road fatalities.
The Regional Transport Officer Ladakh stated that National Road Safety Month is being observed in both districts of UT Ladakh through coordinated efforts by concerned departments. She highlighted the need for safe driving practices, avoidance of overspeeding and drunken driving, and strict compliance with traffic rules, especially considering Ladakh’s difficult terrain and weather conditions. She also underlined the role of print, electronic and digital media in spreading road safety messages.
During the drive, officials distributed information pamphlets, medals and road safety materials among drivers and commuters. Checks were also conducted on private and passenger vehicles, with special focus on the use of seat belts, helmets and other required safety measures.
The campaign reflects the administration’s continued commitment towards ensuring safer roads and protecting human lives across the district.
