Suru Valley Festival 2026 Highlights Kargil’s Tourism, Culture and Sustainable Development Potential.
Kargil, August 26, 2026: The 2nd Suru Summer Festival commenced today with a strong focus on promoting Kargil as a premier sustainable, cultural and adventure tourism destination, while creating greater livelihood and employment opportunities for local communities.
As part of the event, various adventure activities were organised at different locations. A cycle rally was held from the University of Ladakh campus to Ashina; paragliding was conducted at Tsunchay Doks, Namsuru Thang; river rafting took place from Kochik Bridge to Damsna; and rock climbing was organised near Karpo Khar Castle.
Addressing the gathering during the festival, Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor (CEC), LAHDC Kargil, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, called for collective and coordinated efforts by the Tourism and Culture Departments, local entrepreneurs, media persons, social media influencers and all other stakeholders to promote Kargil tourism at the national and international level.
The CEC expressed gratitude to the Tourism and Culture Departments, officers and officials, organisers, media persons, social media influencers and all those who contributed towards the successful organisation of the festival.
Dr. Jaffer Akhoon said the Suru Valley Festival has been conceived with the broader objective of showcasing the valley’s exceptional natural beauty, rich cultural heritage and immense adventure tourism potential, while opening new avenues of livelihood for local communities. He recalled the recognition received by Suru Valley in National Geographic’s tourism listings and said such recognition reflects the valley’s growing appeal among travellers.
He emphasised that tourism promotion has the potential to directly and indirectly benefit hoteliers, taxi operators, guest house and homestay owners, guides, artisans, local entrepreneurs and other sections of society by generating employment and sustainable livelihood opportunities.
Highlighting Kargil’s immense potential in adventure tourism, the CEC said activities such as rock climbing, paragliding, cycling, trekking and mountaineering could be further developed to establish Kargil as a prominent adventure tourism destination. He called for concerted efforts to create the necessary ecosystem and infrastructure to support these activities.
The CEC also appreciated the contribution of the Tourism and Culture Departments and acknowledged the continued support and commitment of Deputy Commissioner/CEO, LAHDC Kargil, Rakesh Kumar, IAS, towards the development of Kargil and successful implementation of major programmes and initiatives in the district.
Dr. Jaffer Akhoon said Kargil was witnessing progress across diverse sectors, including agriculture, healthcare, education, handloom, floriculture and sericulture. He stressed that the focus should not merely be on development but on sustainable development, with tourism serving as an important means of generating long-term livelihood opportunities for local people.
Emphasising the importance of cultural tourism, the CEC said Kargil’s rich traditions, cuisine, handicrafts, customs and way of life must be promoted alongside its spectacular landscapes. He said festivals such as the Suru Summer Festival provide an important platform to introduce visitors from across the country and abroad to the region’s unique cultural heritage.
He further said that the festival should, in the coming years, evolve beyond Suru Valley and showcase the entire Kargil district, including Drass and Zanskar, enabling all regions to collectively contribute towards strengthening the district’s tourism economy.
Addressing media persons and social media influencers, Dr. Jaffer Akhoon urged them to become ambassadors of Kargil tourism by using their platforms to showcase the district’s mountains, landscapes, culture, adventure activities and hospitality to audiences across India and internationally.
He also highlighted the growing role of local entrepreneurs and various government initiatives in generating employment and empowering communities, including women-led enterprises and initiatives in the education sector.
The CEC expressed hope that the Suru Summer Festival would develop into an important annual platform for tourism promotion, cultural preservation, local entrepreneurship and sustainable development in Kargil.
He also extended greetings to the people on the occasion of Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi and appreciated the organisers for incorporating the region’s cultural heritage into the festival while maintaining due respect for the occasion.
Secretary, Tourism Department, UT Ladakh, Shri Sanjit Rodrigues while speaking at the inaugural ceremony, highlighted the immense potential of Suru Valley to emerge as a leading destination for adventure, sustainable and community-based tourism.
Describing Suru Valley as one of Ladakh’s popular yet relatively unexplored destinations, the Secretary said the valley offers a unique combination of rich cultural heritage and spectacular natural landscapes, creating tremendous opportunities for adventure tourism and new visitor experiences.
He said the growing recognition of Suru Valley as a tourism destination reflects its emerging appeal among travellers and informed that the Tourism Department, with the support of LAHDC Kargil, is working towards strengthening adventure tourism in the region, particularly trekking, mountaineering and other adventure-based activities.
The Secretary further informed that efforts are underway to position the Suru Festival among the nine State-level festivals of Ladakh, which would provide the event with greater visibility and help establish it as a major annual tourism and cultural festival of the Union Territory.
Emphasising inclusive tourism development, he said that growth in tourist footfall must translate into tangible benefits for local communities. Increased tourism, he said, should create livelihood and employment opportunities for local youth, homestay owners, artisans, guides, transporters, entrepreneurs and other stakeholders.
He also highlighted the significant increase in tourist arrivals in the region this year, with visitors travelling to Ladakh from different parts of India as well as various countries across the world. He said the growing tourist footfall presents both an opportunity and a responsibility to ensure that tourism develops in a sustainable and environmentally responsible manner.
Calling for greater emphasis on sustainable and eco-tourism, the Secretary stressed the need to protect the fragile Himalayan environment while expanding tourism opportunities. He emphasised responsible tourism practices that maintain a balance between economic development and conservation of the region’s natural and cultural heritage.
He expressed gratitude to LAHDC Kargil, the District Administration, tourism department, culture department ,police personnel, media personnel, artists, singers, local communities and volunteers for their support and cooperation in making the Suru Festival possible.
The 2nd Suru Summer Festival showcases the rich cultural traditions, natural beauty and adventure tourism potential of Suru Valley through a diverse range of cultural, culinary, handicraft, music and adventure activities, bringing together local communities, artists, tourism stakeholders, media persons, influencers and visitors.
The festival is aimed at providing a broader platform for Kargil’s tourism potential and strengthening the collective efforts towards establishing the district as a leading destination for sustainable, cultural, community-based and adventure tourism.
The event was also graced by CEC Kargil, Dr Jaffer Akhoon, Secretary Tourism Sanjit Rodrigues, Executive Councilor Altaf Hussain, Executive Councillor Aga Syed Ali, DC Kargil Rakesh Kumar, SSP Kargil Nitin Yadav, various sectorial heads of the Depertment, District officers, large number of local inhabitants, artists, singers, and students.
