    Two-Day Workshop on Mushroom Cultivation Concludes at GDC Zanskar.
    Zanskar, October 6, 2026: The Department of Botany, Government Degree College (GDC) Zanskar, successfully organised a two-day workshop on “Empowering Women’s Livelihoods through Mushroom Cultivation in Zanskar” under the PM-USHA Scheme.
    The workshop aimed to create awareness about mushroom cultivation and highlight its potential as a sustainable livelihood and income-generating opportunity, particularly for women in the Zanskar region.
    The workshop was organised under the supervision and guidance of Dr. Amjad Ali Abbasi, Principal, GDC Zanskar, and convened by Dr. Mohd Hussain, Senior Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology.
    On the first day, Dr. Sabir Hussain delivered the keynote session and provided an overview of mushroom cultivation, highlighting its potential in Zanskar as a sustainable livelihood opportunity. He also elaborated on the basic requirements, techniques, procedures and practical aspects of successful mushroom cultivation.
    The second day featured an insightful virtual presentation by Dr. Nassreen Fatima Kacho, Professor and Head, KVK Kargil-I, University of Ladakh. She provided participants with scientific and practical insights into the prospects and economic viability of mushroom cultivation in Ladakh, with particular emphasis on its suitability to the region’s agro-climatic conditions.
    Dr. Nassreen highlighted mushroom cultivation as a promising alternative livelihood and income-generating activity for women and small-scale growers in the remote and challenging terrain of Ladakh. She also familiarised participants with different varieties of mushrooms being successfully cultivated across the region and emphasised the importance of adopting scientific and systematic approaches to enhance productivity, diversify livelihoods and generate additional household income.
    The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Nasmeen Hakim, Assistant Professor, Department of Botany, GDC Zanskar, who expressed gratitude to the resource persons, participants and students for their contributions towards the successful conduct of the programme.
