Leh, April 15, 2026: The Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of the University of Ladakh, Prof. (Dr.) Saket Kushwaha, accompanied by Registrar Shri Nawang Tundup and Assistant Registrar, undertook an official visit to Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Nyoma today to review ongoing agricultural initiatives and interact with scientists, farmers, and local stakeholders.
En route to Nyoma, the Vice Chancellor visited a Model Apple Orchard established under the MIDH project at Nee village. The orchard, featuring cold-resistant rootstocks suited to the harsh climatic conditions of Ladakh, has achieved a remarkable survival rate of 98.59 percent. The Vice Chancellor appreciated the team’s efforts in successfully adapting horticultural practices to high-altitude conditions.
At KVK Nyoma, Head of the Kendra, Dr. Phuntsog Tundup, presented a detailed progress report highlighting the achievements of the Kendra along with a comprehensive action plan for 2026–27. The presentation showcased various interventions in agriculture and allied sectors aimed at improving the livelihoods of farmers in the Changthang region.
Nambardars from Nyoma, Mudh and Nidder expressed their appreciation for the impactful work carried out by the KVK team under the leadership of Dr. Phuntsog Tundup. They commended the team’s dedication in extending services to remote and high-altitude areas such as Tsaga, located at over 15,000 feet above mean sea level.
Registrar, University of Ladakh, Shri Nawang Tundup, lauded the persistent efforts of the KVK team in delivering results despite extreme climatic challenges.
The Vice Chancellor appreciated the achievements of KVK Nyoma and encouraged the team to motivate farmers and nearby communities to adopt improved agricultural technologies. Emphasizing sustainability and income generation, he suggested developing a robust mechanism for assured marketing of agricultural produce.
He also directed the establishment of KVK Nyoma as an Aadhaar Service Center to facilitate Aadhaar enrollment and correction services for local residents. Further, he assured farmers of organizing exposure visits to other hilly states to enable them to learn best practices and innovations in agriculture.
During the afternoon session, the visiting dignitaries toured the KVK farm, including mud-walled greenhouses where green vegetables are cultivated under controlled conditions despite extreme weather. The visitors appreciated the innovative techniques and asset creation efforts undertaken by the KVK team.
The visit concluded with a reaffirmation of the University’s commitment to strengthening extension services and supporting farmers in Changthang through science-based interventions and collaborative efforts.
