Zanskar Celebrates World Environment Day with Plantation and Cleanliness Drives.
Zanskar, June 5, 2025 – World Environment Day was observed with enthusiasm across the Zanskar Sub-Division today, with major events held at the 13 Border Road Task Force (BRTF) camp in Padum and at Photang, Karsha.
At the BRTF camp in Padum, Executive Councillor (EC) for RDD, Forest, and Information, LAHDC Kargil, Er. Phunsok Tashi, presided as the chief guest, while Lt. Col. Aditya Venka attended as guest of honour. A key highlight of the celebration was the plantation of saplings of various plant species, organised by the Range Officer, Zanskar.
In a parallel event at Photang, Karsha, the Hon’ble Councilor for Karsha Constituency, Mr. Stanzin Jigmat, served as the chief guest, with Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Zanskar, Mr. Romil Singh Donk (IAS), as guest of honour. The programme included a cleanliness drive and plantation activity, which saw active participation from local volunteers including monks, nuns, villagers, and domestic tourists.
Speaking on the occasion, EC Tashi thanked participants for their commitment to environmental conservation. He lauded the collective efforts toward planting trees and maintaining cleanliness, calling it a step toward a healthier environment for both the valley and the wider world.
Both the EC and other dignitaries emphasized the urgent need to preserve the region’s ecological balance. They appealed to the general public to reduce plastic use and adopt environmentally sustainable practices.
World Environment Day was also marked in several other villages and locations across the Zanskar Sub-Division, reaffirming local commitment to a cleaner, greener Ladakh.
